Lunch for the Kids

by Rita Langeland

All the Kids

“There’s a young boy here with five barley loaves and two fish.
But what good is that with this huge crowd?”

John 6:9 (New Living Translation)

Jesus was sitting on a hillside in Galilee surveying the large crowd. There were over 5,000 people who had gathered to hear His words. Turning to Philip, he asked, “Where can we buy bread to feed all these people?” Philip was incredulous that Jesus would even ask such a question. “Even if we worked for months, we wouldn’t have enough money to feed them!”

Then Andrew, Simon Peter’s brother, spoke up. “There’s a young boy here with five barley loaves and two fish. But what good is that with this huge crowd?”

Andrew was saying that a small offering - that little boy’s lunch - was no match for the HUGE need that they were facing. But Jesus saw it in a different way. He accepted the tiny offering, blessed it and then passed it out. As He did, it was multiplied a thousand times over, until it fed that huge crowd. And as if to make a point of how “little” can be turned into “much” - there were even leftovers! His disciples gathered 12 baskets of bread and fish after everyone was fed.

A lot of people think of feeding, clothing, housing and educating the orphans at Treasures of Africa or the Ukrainian orphans served by Operation Lazarus as such a HUGE need that a small offering from them would have no impact. They think, “What good could a small amount do? But when God blesses me with a lot of money, I will give a big offering to help the orphans.” But they don’t realize that Jesus can make their small offering multiply!

I have often thought of the phenomenal impact that would be created if everyone who read this magazine would committ to donate just $10 per month - (in essence the amount it would cost to go out for lunch) on an ongoing basis. And then the multiplied power of that one person encouraging just one other person to give up a lunch - each month - to help support orphans. Like the little boy’s lunch in the Gospel story, the impact would be sensational!

To save money - we will not mail you a paper receipt each month - but you will receive one with your total giving for the year to use for tax purposes. Enjoy that sack lunch knowing that your $10 sacrifice of LUNCH FOR THE KIDS will be a great blessing to orphans! Maybe you can’t give $50 or $100 each month to support the work of Treasures of Africa Children’s Home in Tanzania or Operation Lazarus in Ukraine - but you could sacrifice eating out one lunch each month and take a sack lunch to work to be a part of our LUNCH FOR THE KIDS project. Deciding to commit to a $10 gift to help orphans each month will make a difference!
