Emanueli is a 14 year old boy with a striking smile. But behind that smile is a life that had very hard beginnings. His father died when he was very young. Prior to coming to Treasures of Africa, he was living with his mother and step-father. His mother left one day to take his younger brother, Antoni, to the hospital but she never came back. She was HIV positive and had fallen very ill and died while trying to get help for Emanueli’s brother.
His brother Antoni was brought to live at Treasures of Africa. But he and his half-sister Sabetina were living in a rural village with Emanueli’s stepfather, who was drinking a lot and mistreating them. The stepfather refused to take any responsibility for Emmanueli since his mother was dead and he was not his own child. Emmanueli and young sister were brought to live at Treasures of Africa to be with their brother and make a fresh start.
Emanueli was 11 years old when he came to live at TOA, and he had never been to school and did not know how to read. He had to face the enormous challenge of starting first grade at the age when he should have been in the fifth grade. With a lot of one on one help from our tutoring program here at the orphanage, Emanueli learned to read and is now beginning to do well in school.
He loves to play soccer and is almost inseparable from his best friend Innocent who also lives here at TOA. He is learning to play the guitar and sings in the church choir. He wants to be a pastor when he grows up. We are believing the Lord to do mighty things through this young man of God.
