Doreen

Doreen was born in 1999. She suffered the loss of her father to AIDS in 2003 and then a second blow came to her life when her mother died from AIDS in October of 2006. At that time, Doreen was living with her half brothers aged 12 and 18. The 12 year old brother moved out to the streets in order to survive. Her 18 year old brother did not have a job and was not able to properly care for Doreen.

At the age of eight, Doreen was surviving on the kindness of her neighbors who would provide her with food whenever they could. After 10 months of living in extreme poverty and neglect, Doreen came to live at the Treasures of Africa Children's Home upon the recommendation of a local pastor who became aware of her situation.

She arrived at TOA on August 14, 2006 with her 12 year old brother Rama. When she came in she was very dirty but in good health. She walked in our building with the biggest smile on her face. She was so happy to be with us. Doreen has kept that smile on her face. She now has a home with people that love her and many new friends. She fits in beautifully with the other girls and they all get along well. Doreen enjoys attending school and has made her own personal goal to work hard and rank in the top 10 by the end of the school year. Her favorite subjects are Math and English and she enjoys playing basketball at school.

It is a joy to have Doreen here with us. She is a sweet girl with a beautiful smile.
