TOA Kidz Update

Oh, the joys of those who are kind to the poor! The Lord rescues them when they are in trouble. Psalm 41:1 NLT

One of the joys we experience at Hidden with Christ Ministries, is seeing the fruit of the generosity of so many donors who are “kind to the poor” as expressed in the scripture above. All who have donated to help educate poor children in Tanzania through our Treasures of Africa KIDZ project, can experience the same joy as they follow their progress in school and see their photos as they mature through the years.

In early July, we visited Treasures of Africa students who are schooling at two different boarding schools. Our first visit was to Hai Vocational Training Centre in Bomang’ombe, Tanzania. We have four students currently attending: Antoni (left) – studying Electrical Installation, Sabetina (second from left) – studying Food Production, and Jeremia (third from left) and Justice (right) studying Carpentry.

January 20, 2021

It was a warm and lazy Saturday morning in December at Treasures of Africa Children’s Home and the toddlers were all corralled in the Prayer Hut playing with their toys on the concrete floor. Several of our older girls had arrived home from Secondary School for the Christmas break and were holding the babies and chatting with the caregivers. Sitting with the children, listening to their laughter, and watching them build towers with plastic blocks, made me smile. They are just like kids anywhere, I thought, they just want to play and enjoy the attention of the adults in the room.

Walking up the sidewalk toward the entrance to the orphanage building, I found a jump rope contest underway on the porch. Several of the Primary School aged boys were competing to skip rope as long as possible without stopping – as each jump was counted. Then the girls joined in and there was more counting and laughing. Such a sweet, simple moment of uncomplicated happiness.  

I walked into the office with a sigh, knowing deep in my heart that everything I had just seen was about to change.

My name is Irene. I am a girl of 26 years who was raised in an orphanage known as Treasures of Africa Children's Home, located in Moshi, Kilimanjaro, Tanzania. It's my pleasure to ask you to pass through these few paragraphs describing my journey to a successful life. I hope in some way it may inspire you to never think about giving up on whatever you hope for in this life. Or it may give you courage and confidence to always help those who are in need.

In March 1994, I was born into a very poor family. We lived in a rural place called Njoro in the town of Moshi, Tanzania. I was raised by a poor single mother for about twelve years never knowing my biological father. I tried asking my mother about my father, but I couldn't get any pleasing answer. So, we continued living our life until my mother became sick and died in June 2006 leaving me with my poor, drunkard grandmother. By then, I thought my life would always remain the same. I would stay a poor uneducated girl, who begged on the street to survive for a single day. But a merciful God showed up for me in a very unexpected way.

In November 2018, God opened a door for me to attend Oral Roberts University in Tulsa, Oklahoma. I moved to Tulsa in January 2019, not only with joy and gratitude, but with amazement at what God had done to make it possible for me to study at ORU. I had come a long way from my childhood days in a village on the slopes of Mt. Kilimanjaro in Tanzania.

I began classes in the Spring semester of 2019 with a major in Pre-Med. I experienced many challenges as a first semester student trying to adjust to a new culture and the unfamiliar American university education system. But I made it through by the grace of God. 

In the middle of my sophomore year, I felt strongly that I should change the focus of my studies. I made the switch to majoring in Finance with a minor in IT (Information Technology). Deep down I have always been interested in finance since I was a child. I can vividly remember asking questions like, “What would happen if the government printed as much money as possible so that everyone had enough money?”  You probably know the answer and where certain countries ended up after doing just that!
